Hiring an Interior Designer – Reasons #3 and #4

resources

3. To Provide Resources
There’s a world of furnishings, fabrics, case goods and accessories that are available “to the trade only.” I have access to local and national manufacturers and products that are not available to consumers.

4. To Help You Stay Well Connected
Design is only as good as its execution.  I work with the best workrooms, carpenters and painters and have the clout to make sure prices match the quality.

Why not contact me and let’s discuss your project together.   I’m also available for eDesign through Olioboard.

Modern vs. traditional or how about a mix: Moditional?

Have you noticed?  Interior design has moved to cleaner lines over the last several years.  That may lead to a dilemma for those who love the soft and often curvy lines of antique or traditional furniture.  So, what do you do?  Learn to mix the two styles into a cohesive and eclectic mix that is delightful, tasteful and just what you want to add new life.

Here are some suggestions.  For all you “love of all things traditional”, let me emphasize that you stick with only one or two of the suggestions below.  Sometimes too many modern elements can be…well…too much of a good thing, especially if you still want an overall  traditional feel to your room.

1)  Add one larger piece of mid-century modern furniture to a room of traditional furniture.

As in the photo below, adding one larger size piece of mid-century modern furniture adds not only a pop of color but livens up the entire room.

2)  Add modern touches to a room by adding modern lighting.

I would suggest adding that modern touch with table lamps, smaller chandeliers, and sconces to begin your trip into the world of modern rather than utilizing larger floor lamps.

3)  Add one or more pieces of modern art to the walls.

Modern artists have been known to use behemoth canvases.  A large modern art canvas hanging behind a sofa will undeniably be the focal point of a room.  In order to retain the traditional feel of a room, keep the canvas size scaled down.

Now you can breath.  Modern doesn’t have to “take over” your life, but it can breath new life into a traditional room that has become somewhat predictable and uninspiring.

Comment on this post and let me know what you think of mixing modern and traditional furnishings.  Have you tried it?  How about mixing antiques with modern?  Let me hear about your experiences.
